Their Pathways Intro

Welcome to Their Pathways

This is the section where you can talk to someone in your chosen career. This should hopefully help you to decide whether this is the path you want to take. They should give you an idea of what qualifications you need, what experience you need and obviously if you actually want to pursue this career. All the Professionals have their own profile with a set of questions to help you with your choices. They also have some contact details so that if you have any questions you can ask them!!! How cool is that???

Make sure you check back on this page regularly, we try to add more new profiles every week!

If you are a professional, and want to fill out our Questionnaire, so that you can let young peopl know about what you do, please click here , or the "Questionnaire" Link in the menu on the left hand side of the page.

Professional Profile: Hannah Baker-Manager of DepARTure arts in education partnership
designer.gifWhat is your name?
Hannah Baker

What is your profession?

Manager of DepARTure arts in education partnership

What does it entail?
Coordinating projects, supporting artists to work in schools, supporting schools with their arts provision and applying for special awards.  DepARTure work with lots of other organisations and support arts in early years settings (nurseries etc), schools and beyond!

How did you get into it?
I have a background in playwork, working with children in informal education and I also studied Graphic Design at University, I wanted to combine my experience in education with the arts.

Did you need any qualifications?
Yes, a degree plus relevant experience.

What tips would you give to someone interested in your profession?
If you enjoy networking, talking to people and have an interest in all areas of the arts then this could be an interesting job for you.  Get work experience where you can at different types of organisations that work with children and young people to see what you most enjoy. Be confident in asking people for advice if you don’t have the answers yourself.

How competitive is it to get into your area of work?
It is competitive as there aren’t many positions available but people come from a range of backgrounds with different experience so it’s possible to come into the role from many different routes.

What do you enjoy the most about your profession?

Watching children and young people enjoying arts projects.

What do you enjoy the least about your profession?
This role involves dealing with many different people, occasionally you meet someone very unpleasant or rude who can ruin your day but luckily this doesn’t happen that often!

What’s the most interesting thing you have done or the most interesting person you have met?
I went to an amazing two day conference up in Yorkshire all about ‘Learning Spaces’.  There were some very inspirational people there including Peter Jenkinson who established Creative Partnership, a national programme for using creativity in education.  Peter has made some incredible influential things happen yet he’s the most down to earth, likeable person who you could share a good joke with at the same time.  I went away buzzing with enthusiasm and I won’t forget it in a hurry.
