Their Pathways Intro

Welcome to Their Pathways

This is the section where you can talk to someone in your chosen career. This should hopefully help you to decide whether this is the path you want to take. They should give you an idea of what qualifications you need, what experience you need and obviously if you actually want to pursue this career. All the Professionals have their own profile with a set of questions to help you with your choices. They also have some contact details so that if you have any questions you can ask them!!! How cool is that???

Make sure you check back on this page regularly, we try to add more new profiles every week!

If you are a professional, and want to fill out our Questionnaire, so that you can let young peopl know about what you do, please click here , or the "Questionnaire" Link in the menu on the left hand side of the page.

Professional Profile: Rob Foddering-Free Lance Graphic & Web Designer

What is your name?designer.gif
Rob Foddering

What is your profession?
Free Lance Graphic & Web Designer - (mainly for arts organisations) &
Artist.

What does it entail?
Design for print and the web + Wearing a beret & dark glasses.

How did you get into it?
I graduated with a degree in Fine art (painting). After graduating I
used computers to help create my art work and also designed a website
for my painting portfolio.
It was through using computers to create art that I found an interest in
design and realised I could make a living out of it.

Did you need any qualifications?
You don't need any qualifications to be a freelance designer, as you are
your own boss!
But you do need drive, confidence and the ability to stick at things no
matter how hard things get.
However, I do use my art education every time I design something,
consciously or unconsciously. If you can, get qualified!

What tips would you give to someone interested in your profession?
I think it's important to focus on what you enjoy doing in the arts, not
necessarily what you think will provide a good job.
Educate yourself in what you enjoy and your skills will be transferable
to any art form (with a little extra work).
Qualifications will help you with this, but it's your drive that will
get you where you want to be in the end.
One of the most important tips is get to know people in your profession,
or in the areas you want to work in.
When you start out you could work for free for the people / groups you
want to work for. Get your foot in the door!
If you enjoy design, then you'll be learning and thinking about it a
lot, it's all around you. Keep your eyes open!
Most of all have fun!

How competitive is it to get into your area of work?
I think it's very competitive. But if you have something different to
offer and you work hard, then you'll stand out.

What do you enjoy the most about your profession?
Seeing my work in the public domain. Working the (long) hours I choose
to! Meeting interesting people.

What do you enjoy the least about your profession?
Working long hours! Having to fit too much text on to designs!

What’s the most interesting thing you have done or the most interesting
person you have met?
I get to travel a bit for one of my clients. I've been to Kenya and
Borneo on work trips.
Also, working with arts organisations means I get to hear about
opportunities and work with people that do interesting things,
including making a film and performing a puppet show at Glastonbury!
