| Professional Profile: Sandy Wilderspin-Gallery Education |
What is your name?![]() sandy wilderspin What is your profession? Gallery Education What does it entail? Working with artists, communities, schools, visitors, young people.... everyone to spread the joy of contemporary art and attempt to subvert the art snobbery that often surrounds it! How did you get into it? Via museum education which I fell into but then found I loved. Always been involved in the arts in some way but have had to endure many boring jobs along the way! Did you need any qualifications?Gallery Educators need an art degree or related degree to their specialism (e.g. fine art, art history etc), there are many more courses available now that are more specific to Gallery and Museum education. If not, how did you get into your profession? Qualifications are essential but experience and enthusiasm counts for a lot. What tips would you give to someone interested in your profession? Go and get lots of hands on experience and volunteer in galleries , museums, arts events etc. You will make potentially useful contacts and employers are more interested in you if you have participated in something rather than just hit the books! How competitive is it to get into your area of work? I think it's quite competitive, because on the whole it's a lot of fun and the variety means it's never boring. It's the kind of job that intrigues a lot of people! What do you enjoy the most about your profession? Meeting people and conjuring up cunning plans What do you enjoy the least about your profession? Excessive admin and most of all excel spread sheets! What’s the most interesting thing you have done or the most interesting person you have met? I meet lots of interesting people, not many are 'famous' though in the celeb kind of way which is probably good as I do tend to get very star struck. Of course, I think I do interesting things all the time - whether or not anyone else finds then as interesting as me - we'll have to see!! |
