| Professional Profile: Jeff Pigott-graphic designer |
|
What is your name? Being creative. Having ideas and coming up with solutions. Doing something different everyday. Working very hard and long hours - early morning and late at night. How did you get into it? I did an Art Foundation year a long time ago. Then I worked as a trainee modelmaker. Then I went to work for a graphic designer as his assistant in London. Then I got into a London design studio, and later worked on magazines. For the last 28 years I have been self-employed and doing a bit of everything. Did you need any qualifications? Not really - but times have changed. I have got my qualifications later in life. If not, how did you get into your profession? I didn't do very well at school and couldn\'t easily get into art school so did lots of jobs that give me loads of experience. It was easy in the 70's and 80's to do that...not so easy now. Best route is a qualification(s) and then lots of work experience. What tips would you give to someone interested in your profession? Only do it if you are excited by it and have a NEED to do it. Be prepared to work very hard and put in the hours. Make friends with people in the profession. How competitive is it to get into your area of work? It's competitive but that shouldn't put you off. I have always thought it's a balance between being reasonably creative and also being able to get on with people and communicate. Having good ideas is important, but most clients want to know that you will finish the project on time, on budget, and without them having to checkup on what you are doing. Building a good, solid reputation is really important. What do you enjoy the most about your profession? Everyday is different. I meet lots of nice people. I get to please myself a lot. I get a kick out of seeing my work in public places, and the responses I get are usually positive. What do you enjoy the least about your profession? The money isn't always great, and it's precarious with very little security. There are mundane bits - lots of admin and paperwork. Sometimes its hard to take a holiday. What’s the most interesting thing you have done or the most interesting person you have met? Ouch! Often the most interesting thing is the last thing I did so its hard to choose. I set up an art supermarket with 3 other artists. It was just like a store but only sold artworks. It was very cool! Most of the artists I have met or worked with have been really interesting people. |
